History - from Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, the ultimate show-stopping Doo Wop ground induced into the R & B Hall of Fame, to Labelle, the ground breaking glam funk band (Lady Marmalade (Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi Ce Soir?) to a stunning solo career (Busting Out, I Sweat, Transformation), Nona Hendryx has always been on the cutting edge of music. Her collaborations range from Talking Heads, & Brian Eno, Material, Prince and Peter Gabriel to Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz and many others.
Funk & Rock Life
Nona’s new CD - ‘Mutatis Mutandis’ – is set for release late Spring 2012. In Europe and the UK it will be released via Righteous Babe with Festivals and gigs with her Funk Rock band surrounding it and then in the US . This is a quirky and political musical tour de force with current comments on the Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh and Enron – with a lot of sass and funk.
Nuevo Jazz
Passionate about everything she does and especially the new lyrics and vocals she has contributed to Terri Lyne Carrington Mosaic CD. Already a Grammy nominee for Rock This House with Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) and now a Grammy winner; Mosaic won the Grammy for the 2012, ‘Best Female Jazz Vocal Album’. The CD features vocals by Nona,, Esperanza Spalding, Gerri Allen, Sheila E, Cassandra Wilson, Diane Reeves & Dee Dee Bridgwater, Gretchen Parlato to name a few. Nona also collaborated with Chicago, percussionist, Kahil El Zabar for the Ethnics CD ‘Its Time’ contributing vocals & lyrics an touring with the Avant House/Nu Jazz’ ensemble.
Theatre & TV
She’s written music for BLUE a Broadway play with music which starred Phylicia Rashad, and scored and contributed new songs to the film Preaching To The Choir. She and collaborator Charles Randolph Wright have written ‘Skindiver’ a multimedia musical based on Nona’s critically acclaimed CD release of the same name. She collaborated on lyrics and vocals with ex-Tangerine Dream's musician Paul Haslinger on the Golden Globe winning Showtime series “Sleeper Cell”.
Teaching & Mentoring
Nona enjoys being an Ambassador of Artistry for Boston’s Berklee College of Music, a Teaching Artist, sharing the experience and knowledge she’s learned during many decades of live performance. She has helped hesitant artists find their own way to becoming stage knockouts through the Artist Development & Stage Craft course she created for the Clive Davis Recorded Music Dept of Tisch at NYU. Nona lends her time and talents in the U.S & Europe, performing on shows with Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colors Tour’, “Home For Christmas” & events to fund HIV/AIDS organizations, homeless shelters & the Little Black Pearl arts education Options Lab Charter School. Nona teaches several private students, supports organizations that encourage and strive to educate and nurture our youth,
Multimedia Performance
Always pushing boundaries, Nona is exploring the Techno Audio world. Wearing clothing created by Benoit Maubrey, she has performed in an ‘Audio Tutu’ A self-contained sound system to exploring non-conventional spaces and merging music, multi-media technology with the environment and art. Nona has performed this at Somerset House in London, several Art Festivals and Museums and Art Galleries Internationally.
